7 Easy Steps to Recover Data from a Corrupt SD Card

SD CARD

Your data usually becomes inaccessible when your SD card, commonly used in smartphones to store videos,Musics, pictures  other documents gets damaged or corrupt. Despite trying many times, it will neither open files on your desktop nor on laptops.

So, hundreds of valuable pictures, your collection of favorite movies and songs, and dozens of documents are at stake. Relax! You can try some SD card recovery solutions to fix problems and recover the lost files. Here are some steps to help you recover the lost files if you can’t access your data from the card.

#1. Determination of the SD card type: First, get information about the storage capacity of your card, whether it is a standard SD card type or high-capacity card type as the memory allocation formatting varies from one card to another.

#2. Visit the device manufacturer’s site: In case your data is on an SDHC card, then you need the SDHC device to read it. Some devices may have software downloads available to upgrade the device to read cards. So, visit the device manufacturer’s website to know if such an upgrade is available there.

#3. Insert your card into the reader: The computer won’t read it if no drive letter is assigned to it. In some cases, the reader may be assigned a drive letter but when you click on it, you will see an instruction – Insert disk into drive E – that means it is not reading the card.

#4. Try to read different files in the card: If your reader can go through some of the files and leaves others, it means only some of the files are corrupted. Then, search file recovery programs on the internet and fix the problem.

#5. Scan the SD card: Sometimes scanning the card fixes all the problems. It is not necessary that it will correct a corrupted file but do try it. Locate the card in ‘My Computer or Windows Explorer’ and right-click on it. From the pop-up menu, click on ‘Properties’. You will find a new window showing a pie chart. Now select the ‘Tools’ tab, then click on the ‘Error Checking’ button. Click the check box for fixing file system errors.

#6. If it is still inaccessible: It is possible that the directory will list the file names but it is still inaccessible. In such a case, right-click on the drive letter and select ‘Properties’. The pie chart will show the used space on the card. If it shows all or almost all free space, then either the files have been deleted or the directory has been erased. In this case, a file recovery or undelete program function may help.

#7. If you are unable to save the file: If your card reads okay but you can’t save a file, the card may be write protected. Go to ‘Lock’, at the edge of the card. If this switch is slid away from the connector end of the card, then it is locked or write protected. Save it when the switch is in the unlocked position.
